Citrine Insight: Default to Joy

Making Progress

Recently, I have been experiencing a sense of overwhelm. It combines various aspects of my life, including work and personal matters. Some of these things are positive, while others are not so great. However, when all of these thoughts flood my mind simultaneously, it feels as though my brain becomes too cloudy to think clearly.

My main focus is finding ways to clear these clouds and transform the overwhelm into something with momentum. I don't want it to paralyze me. In times like these, I often turn to the 80/20 rule, the Pareto Principle. 80% of results usually come from 20% of effort. So, I step back and evaluate which tasks will bring the most joy and progress quickly and which ones I can postpone or avoid altogether.

Creating lists has always been a helpful strategy for me. Usually, I focus solely on the list of tasks I need to complete. However, I have recently started using a "start, stop, continue" list to optimize my brain power during overwhelming moments. Learn more about this simple process with this months tool.

When making this list, I consider the impact of each task. I measure this in terms of results but also in terms of what brings me joy. You are more likely to do what you love. There are various ways to assess impact, and we must do what suits us and our team. Using the method of results and joy helps me prioritize tasks and improve my focus, productivity and, most notably, the frequency of smiles and laughter.

Remember the joy.
